چکیده

Abstract Keel bone fracture (KBF) of laying hens has become one the important welfare problems for health and production performance. The present study aimed to assess fear responses in native breed Lindian chickens commercial Hyline Brown with without KBF at late period. At their 56-week-age, a total 76 80 selected from furnished cages were housed individually battery cages. divided into normal group keel group. tests, including tonic immobility tests (TI), open field (OFT), startle reflex (SRT) measured sequentially. fractured two had significant elevated duration time TI test than that (P < 0.05). In OFT test, number grids, steps, spent outer ring significantly less those 0.05), inner was greater movement latency circle but grids steps passed There no difference call between strain > score Therefore, reduced later stage by affecting behavioral responses.

Do Laying Hens with Keel Bone Fractures Experience Pain?

The European ban on battery cages has forced a change towards the use of non-cage or furnished cage systems, but unexpectedly this has been associated with an increased prevalence of keel bone fractures in laying hens. Bone fractures are acutely painful in mammals, but the effect of fractures on bird welfare is unclear. We recently reported that keel bone fractures have an effect on bird mobili...

Effects of housing, perches, genetics, and 25-hydroxycholecalciferol on keel bone deformities in laying hens.

Several studies have shown a high prevalence of keel bone deformities in commercial laying hens. The aim of this project was to assess the effects of perch material, a vitamin D feed additive (25-hydroxyvitamin D(3); HyD, DSM Nutritional Products, Basel, Switzerland), and genetics on keel bone pathology. The study consisted of 2 experiments. In the first experiment, 4,000 Lohmann Selected Legho...

Keel bone condition in laying hens: a histological evaluation of macroscopically assessed keel bones.

The objective of the present study was to conduct a corresponding histological analysis of 162 macroscopically assessed keel bones (1: severe, 2: moderate, 3: slight, 4: no deformity). Four layer lines were used and hens were kept in furnished cages, small group systems (both allowing more activities due to the provision of perches) and an aviary system, which fully conformed to the EU standard...

Laying Performance and Egg Quality of Hens Supplemented with Sodium Bicarbonate During the Late Laying Period

This study was conducted to determine effects of dietary NaHCO supplementation on egg 3 production and egg quality during the late laying period. Hisex Brown layers, 54 wks of age, were blocked according to the cage location and then assigned randomly to receive one of four diets containing 0, 0.1, 0.2, or 0.4% NaHCO for 75 d. Each diet was replicated in 6 groups; each consisting of 2 cages con...

The Influence of Keel Bone Damage on Welfare of Laying Hens

This article reviews current knowledge about welfare implications of keel bone damage in laying hens. As an initial part, we shortly describe the different conditions and present major risk factors as well as findings on the prevalence of the conditions. Keel bone damage is found in all types of commercial production, however with varying prevalence across systems, countries, and age of the hen...
